Can you tell me how to accomplish the text styles of the demo on the briefing room page where the text "the briefing room" is highlighted with lines above and below and "the" is in italics. Also, how do you highlight in gray like lower on the page?

Sure, finally someone asked me that question Just put 'em' tags around the text you want italicized.

I can execute the italics easily but how about the lines above and below that really make the text prominent

Ohhh.. sorry about that.
Two things:

"the briefing room" is highlighted with lines above and below

This is done by adding a class of 'pagetitle' to the element. Also you can use the default WP page titles theme option (automatically puts this on the page.

how do you highlight in gray like lower on the page?

This is just a simple 'blockquote' element.
