New user here. Breadcrumb NavXT is set up as a widget and I can only see a way to add it to a sidebar. Is there a way to add it to the main content area, either below the branding area or carousel area?

Yes. Go into PlatformPro Settings -> Template Setup -> Site Header and drag the breadcrumbs box into the displayed header sections box.
