I have a page with a left sidebar. The content area is fine right to the sidebar, but the soapbox section is full-width and goes under the sidebar. Any way I can force it to remain beside it?

Sounds like a new section needs to be made. If this is just for one page you could use the content sidebar.

Is there a reason why we can't add the soapboxes in the Page Content Area?

No reason, we would have to add a new section which generate the css dynamically based on the main column not the full width. I'll recommend to Andrew.
