I'm trying to add a simple black rectangle to main nav. I have the image uploaded. I've tried using the code from w3 with no luck. What code is correct and where do I insert it.

Would a border on top of the nav work?
Are you using Firebug? you can manually enter custom CSS on pages and see their effect live.
Without a live link we'd need to see a before and after (or desired result) screenshot/mockup
