I have most of the coding done to have the right and down carets display to indicate open and close.
If you want to add your own icon then in each Accordion title you can put <i class=icon-[name-of-icon]></i> Title of Accordion.
I plan on having an update with the caret by the end of the week.

Hi,
because not all users might be instantly realizing that they need to click on an accordion title in order to see more content, I'd like to display a + button or bootstrap icon-plus to the right of the title bar, but haven't found out how to do this yet. Any ideas?

Check your Store updates -- Accordions now has an open/close toggle icon and first accordion open on page load. Enjoy.
