successful changes in firebug do not result in successful changes in css.  The changed elements look perfect in firebug but do not result in changes to the page when entered verbatim in css.

 

specifically, I'm trying to change the font size and background color of the title bar on the videopress video here:

What CSS did you try to apply?

 

Keep in mind that Firefox has a menu of different levels for the site's elements.  You see it just after the left-side selector cursor item.

Hi Rob, tried all this:

   font-size: 50%;
}
.videopress-title  {
    background-color: #330033 !important;
    color: #87AE11 !important;
    line-height: 1.2em !important;
    padding-bottom: 0px;
    padding-left: 0;
    padding-right: 0;
    padding-top: 0px;
}
.page-id-4118 body, .font1, .font-primary, .commentlist {
    font-family: Candara,sans-serif;
    font-size: 14px;
    line-height: 26px;
}

 

The only thing that worked was the reduction of the play-button (from 500% to 50%)

What I was really hoping to do was make the background behind the video title transparent, and change the font color to something in keeping with the site colors, like orange

I'm not sure why this is happening, or not happening as the case may be. The color should change.

 

You might notice the element.style in Firebug.

 

Try to prefix that with .videopress-title and edit it.

 

That's an educated guess, but still a guess.

in both FF and Chrome, using element.style just stripped all the css except play button. verrrrrrry interesting.

Have you already tried adding #page at the beginning of the selector?

I have had the same problem. I can change something in Firebug to exactly how I like it and when copied into custom CSS there is no change. I am working on font size as well, however this happened with several things. I have pnly had this problem since upgrading to Pagelines. It always worked fine in Platform Pro.
