Do you have any recommendations for optimizing images:

do you guys usually determine the max size they could possibly end up rendering and resize to that?  or do you just ensure they are the right proportion for the content areas and go with that?  

 

any advice on target file size for images likes the ones i'm using in the features area vs the boxes?

When it comes to images, there is no set size that your images should be but the smaller the better. There are a number of ways you can optimise your images such as:

However, this doesn't mean you can have images that are 1MB, then think oh I can just optimise it now using one of the above services, your images should already have been a small size to begin with.
