Can I add an icon to menu items, something like the attached image?

Yes you can add a icon glyphs

You can make a custom link and add at Navigation Label

For example, like in my web (arte-baires.com.ar)

<i class="icon-home icon-white"></i> Arquitectura

yes this is just what I want to do but I guess I just don't know how to add this class and artwork for the icon.

Hi there, Pagelines uses the navbar from bootstrap and the has fontawesome installed (which is the icons) so you could follow this video tutorial which will show you how to add icons into the menu.
