Is there a way to control the height/depth of the content area? I'm getting a lot of extra space between my actual content and the footer. www.johntunneyphotography.com

It would appear that NextGen Gallery is your culprit.

When other elements add margins and padding, the result is a huge gap between the bottom of your slider and the footer (menu).

 

I believe you have to adjust the settings in NGG to control that height. Adjustments to padding and margins can be done by inspecting using Firebug or Chrome's Inspection Tools.  You can apply changes via Custom Code in Site Options.
