Gavin,
1. I've actually disabled mobile view to make it work properly. It's surprisingly more responsive without it. That's done in PL.
2. There's a whole bunch of them, but candidly, they have limited success. I have... Bad Behavior (no comments about my forum responses please, lol); Ban Hammer; and Skt NURCaptcha.
3. I didn't, but I think Vanilla has an export functionality. How it works, I have no idea. I'm sure both Vanilla and BuddyPress have some documentation on exporting/importing.

has anyone had experience of using Buddypress and BBpress with pagelines and mobiles?
currently my clients forum is on vanilla, which has great out of the box mobile functionality.
but we are thinking of using buddypress for the 'facebook' type features.
any experiences or thoughts you can share?
thanks

For a community based website, I would always go with either IBP or Xenforo for the forum. There both quite simple to skin, once you get the hang of their system.

I was really hoping to get some feedback from people in the pagelines community that have already gone down this road (buddypress - pagelines - mobiles).
i imagine that there must have been a few who have tried?

I have a combination of bbPress and BuddyPress on my site now for about 9 months, having gone from BuddyPress to Vanilla and back to BuddyPress. I love the look, feel and functionality, but my honest assessment is:
- It generates way too many spam registrations and postings
- The social networking functions are much overrated
- It definitely works in mobile devices, provided you've set up your site for a mobile view
- You'll need plenty of anti-spammer capability and even with that, you can expect at least one a day.

thank you, that was exactly the sort of feedback i was looking for.
few more questions
1) are you setting for mobile in pagelines or buddypress?
2) can you recommend any plugins for the spam problem? ( i have the same issue with vanilla any ways)
3) how did you export the data from vanilla to buddypress?
thanks again
