OK, had to set a background color of WHITE to make the menu/nav bar text more visible.

But the color stretches out to the right beyond the width of the content+sidebar area (and feature slider area, etc)

tried everything I know to fix it to a standard 1100 px. Any suggestsion?

resolved this.
I RESAVED the fixed width selection in the layout editor. I had already done it once but i guess it didn't believe me.
