I am new to the PL Framework, but have some experience with the PlatformPro. I want to have the #branding area be transparent, but it seems the #page-canvas background color is ruling the day.
Can you please point me to a resource area that would assist me figuring this out?

You can use Firebug to inspect the page canvas and determine what CSS you need to use to make it transparent. This tutorial shows you how:

Hi,
The first thing you need to do is target the branding section content area, which you can do with FireBug as Catrina stated above. Then you will need to use the background:rgba in order to make your branding section transparent.
