Is it possible to make the latest posts 'home page' only display posts from a particular category?

in the setup options under static page, what is the second option for? ie. settings/reading/static page/ the second options posts page.... do you have a link to help on this in documentation?

is there are link between the 2 questions above?

To answer your questions...
1. Yes, it's possible, provided you use a plugin called Special Recent Posts. The plugin allows you to place a shortcode on the page and set it to a specific category. CSS allows you to resize the images as well.

2. In Settings > Reading the second option is for a blog page (which is all the posts listed in descending date order). You create a simple blank page with absolutely no content in it. Save it, then include it in that 2nd option in Settings > Reading (it appears in the list).

The blog page compliments a static homepage, which often includes different content.
