I don't know of any plugin in particular since I've never used one for membership purposes before, but they can be searched for here: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/

I'm not familiar with any plugin that creates that functionality, but I did a search and found this: http://speckyboy.com...-for-wordpress/ (hopefully this is helpful)

The option should be available in your forum account settings. Click on your user name link in this topic and click on the "My Preferences" link on the right side. You'll be able to select which e-mail notifications you want to receive.

I'm guessing since you found the s2member plugin, you don't need further assistance with creating a log-in area. Do you need help with anything else?
