I don't want to completely copy http://nymag.com/, but I was just curious if its possible to create various content sections with various layouts like they do. For example in the main content column of their site, Entertainment and Restaurants have a different layout. I suppose this could be done with good ol' html and sticking it into a widget as part of the content sidebar, but I'm just curious. Thanks!

It would probably take quite a bit of customization to get their particular disjointed column layout. You could get pretty close with a regular 3 column layout thought and it probably would look better.
