If I am using the custom field option on a post to pull in something into the sidebar and I want to have the default sidebar box styling (box, backgrounds, etc) what code / html / would I need to use?

Sure to create widget with Html you will need the following markup:

 
	 <div class="widget">

	 	   <h3 class="wtitle">Your Title</h3>

	              WIDGET CONTENT
	              ...
